Cognitive and educational psychologists have spent decades testing which study habits actually change what you can recall weeks later. Two come out clearly ahead. Several popular habits — rereading, highlighting, and matching lessons to a "learning style" — do not hold up. 02 — A Popular Myth

"Learning styles" isn't on the ledger — on purpose.

"Learning styles" — the idea that each person learns best through a fixed preferred channel (visual, auditory, kinaesthetic) and that matching teaching to that channel improves learning — is not a rated technique here because it isn't a technique at all. It's a claim about how learning works, and the claim has been tested directly.

Pashler, McDaniel, Rohrer & Bjork's 2008 review in Psychological Science in the Public Interest looked specifically for studies with the design the theory requires: learners identified by their preferred style, then randomly taught in a matching or mismatching way, then compared on the same test. Almost no published research used that design — and the handful that did found no advantage from matching. Their conclusion, quoted directly: "at present, there is no adequate evidence base to justify incorporating learning-styles assessments into general educational practice."

Before you change how you study.

Is highlighting completely useless?

Not useless, but low-yield: Dunlosky et al. (2013) rated highlighting and underlining low utility because, on their own, they rarely improve performance on later tests beyond simply reading the material. It isn't harmful — it just shouldn't be your main strategy.

Why do "learning styles" persist if the evidence doesn't support them?

The idea is intuitive and flattering — everyone feels they have a preferred way of taking in information.
